Smoke and a Pancake

Want to know how to ruin a successful movie series?

Werit already used the title I was looking for, so whatever. However, as he points out, yesterday we got our Producer’s letter as well as a small patch. The patch changed the new “stance” mechanic for the Rune Priest/Zealot to function as a 1:1 ratio, as well as a couple minor bug fixes. The bigger subject of note was the producer’s letter.

In this letter, Carrie hints at the removal of the VP system, and how it is going to change the face of the ORvR campaign. Gone will be the days of Waithammer, allegedly. Between her and Andy’s answers on the Q&A thread, we can see them moving toward a more dynamic and actively-involved PvP system, with sights on the city to hopefully take queue from the things that worked there.

Additionally, we get Mythic-based confirmation of a Skaven-themed zone, and that skaven WILL be playable, and not an NPC faction. Keep in mind though, playable can mean a lot of things. Pets are playable. RTS games have playable units. Companions are playable. Mercenaries from Diablo 2 were playable, sort of. It leaves a lot of wiggle room for what exactly the skaven will be, in terms of actual gameplay. I’ll go out on a limb and say this though: I’d be surprised if they were companion characters. Mostly because of the lore, I have a real hard time seeing Games Workshop give the go-ahead on any of the Order races working alongside Skaven. It seems like a pretty large lore-breaker to me, as everything I know about the ratmen points towards a deep-seated hatred between them, and as we all know, dwarves treat grudges like precious gems.

Oh, and Carrie reiterated, again, that Warhammer is NOT GOING FREE TO PLAY.

Yeah, figured that last bit needed stressing.

Yea…people keep mentioning that Skaven will be playable by both sides. Lore says NO!

As an Order follower, I refuse any dealings with Rat…except to cook them over a low heat for some Rat on a Stick!

Playable by both sides does not mean they are working alongside either side. Merely that the people behind the monitors from each side get to control them. So presumably Skaven are just against everyone, somehow… gated control, who knows.

Though the Skaven renegades for hire comment from Carrie was a total lore breaker from an Order perspective 😛

Absolutely correct about the workign alongside comment. But as you alluded to, the comment from Carrie gives me some concern lore-wise.

Some interesting things to mull over for sure. Skaven working along everyone is a HUGE lore breaker in my book though. They hate everyone.

There have been a few comments recently that Mythic definitely thinks that City sieges are happening too frequently and that in 1.4 they won’t happen as often. I hardly ever get to go to the City myself, but whatever. Who needs Sovereign gear anyway.

    • shadowwar says:

City sieges have slowed to a crawl on Gorfang, in large pat because of AAO. Previously, they were happening 3-4 times a day, which is definitely too often.

      • Attic says:

You mean there’s actual ORvR occurring instead of just endless bloody scen pops? After suffering from WoW for the past 4 months that’s kinda tempting. Assuming you’re talking about Gorfang and not Baddielands.

      • shadowwar says:

Yes, on Gorfang. ORvR is happening. SC pops still are semi-frequent, but as AAO rolled out along in time with most people having gotten the SC weapons or the fire truely reduced to a kindle, it’s much more common to see people in lakes.

      • Rikker says:

Same on Iron Rock. You can actually get some decent oRVR on in the lakes. This weekend there was mostly a constant 2-3 wbs out there for each side. Good times.
